GENERAL INFO

WHAT: VIRTUE INVITATIONAL IN-HOUSE TAEKWONDO TOURNAMENT

WHERE: Virtue Taekwondo, 9915 224th St E Suite 224, Graham WA, 98338

WHEN: Saturday, September 6th, 2025 (competition begins at 9am)

WHO: All amateur athletes ages 4+. White (absolute beginner) through 2nd Degree Black Belt.

PARKING: We have a large, easy-to-access parking lot!

FOOD: Close-by restaurants include Oliver's Fish & Chips, Sun's Teriyaki, Mongolian Grill, Amici Italian Eatery, Domino's Pizza, Little Caesars, Subway, Starbucks, Jack in the Box, Burger King, Popeye's & more.

COMPETITION: Divisions will be Co-ED and based on age/belt/experience for POOMSAE and age/belt/weight/experience for SPARRING. All competitors will receive 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. We also take efforts to avoid students from the same dojang compete together, although this cannot be guaranteed. In the event no adequate opponent is registered to allow for a standard match or bracket, an exhibition match will be held which guarantees automatic 1st Place.

The spirit of Taekwondo including mannerisms of respect, humility, and discipline, is expected from all participants. Displays of rudeness, pridefulness, or uncooperativeness are not acceptable at this tournament.

NOT ABIDING BY THE BELOW RULES MAY RESULT IN BEING REMOVED FROM THIS EVENT

ATTITUDE & RESPECT

  • Kindness should be shown to all athletes, spectators, and staff. We want to create an atmosphere of mutual respect, camaraderie, and healthy competition.

  • Harassment, unsportsmanlike conduct, or arguing publicly with event staff is not acceptable.

  • Athletes and coaches must obey the referees orders at all times.

APPEARANCE

  • Appropriate attire is necessary to enter the venue.

  • Coaches, please dress appropriately & professionally. Avoid hats, denim, tanks tops, gaudy jewelry, graphic t-shirts, or casual wear. Nice shorts are okay in hot weather.

  • Athletes must be visibly well-groomed and hygienic. Avoid unkempt hair, untrimmed toenails/fingernails, dirty/poorly-fitting uniforms, etc.

  • Athletes must wear their full uniform top & bottom including their belt. T-shirts should not be worn instead of the formal top during active competition. Articles of clothing worn underneath the dobok must not alter its appearance or function.

  • No socks or shoes unless approved for special circumstances.

LANGUAGE

  • In accordance with the spirit of Taekwondo, use of the terms "Sir" and "Ma'am" should be used freely and extensively as appropriate.

  • Profanity, taunting, or threatening violence is strictly prohibited.

OTHER RULES

  • SHOES. For this event, we ask that all active participants not wear shoes on the mats. This is for safety, cleanliness, and the longevity of our mats.

  • PUNCTUALITY. Athletes and coaches must be on-time for all call-times. We cannot guarantee an individual's participation if they are late. Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to prevent timing issues. 

  • COACHING. Sparring athletes may not compete without a coach. One coach per athlete only. Sidelined coaching is not allowed. This ensures safety, encouragement, and fair play. 

  • UNHEALTHY SUBSTANCES. Smoking, use of drugs or alcohol, or any mind-altering substance or steroid is strictly prohibited at all times.

  • PHOTOGRAPHY. Please be considerate of others and not block spectators' view. No flash photography.

  • FOOD & DRINK. Please no outside food or drink. Water or coffee is okay.

  • CHEERING. Tasteful cheering is allowed. Excessive yelling, negative commentary, booing, etc. is not allowed. Noise makers, air horns, or disruptive items are not allowed.

  • COMPETITION FLOOR. Only athletes, coaches, event staff at their appropriate scheduled times are allowed on the event floor / mats. Masters / dojang-owners may access all relevant areas to support their athletes.

POOMSAE RULES

Kukkiwon-approved Taegeuk and Black Belt poomsae (Koryo or Keumgang) only.

Poomsae will be judged based on the five criteria listed below.

Each below criterion will be worth between 0.5 - 2.0 points each.

 

1. ACCURACY (Correct moves + Move precision) + 2.0 Max

2. BALANCE (Stability + Gracefulness) +2.0 Max

3. EXPRESSION (Confidence + Focus) + 2.0 Max​

4. ENERGY (Power + Kihap) +2.0 Max

5. RHYTHM (Speed + Flow) +2.0 Max

10 POINT MAXIMUM

ILLEGAL POOMSAE ACTIONS (-Point Penalties, Re-dos, or Disqualification):

  • Making contact with a person or object

  • Overly-exaggerated moves/kihap

  • Performing unapproved poomsae

  • Starting over without permission

  •  

    Speaking

SPARRING RULES

Based on a modified mix of traditional and modern Olympic Taekwondo styles.

MATCH STRUCTURE:

  • Two initial rounds (third sudden death round in the event of a tie)

  • Headshot Divisions = All Black Belts and ages 11 and up+ (Light 

    head contact ONLY)
  • Sudden Death (Golden Point) can be won via gamjeom committed by opponent.
  • Points carry-over across rounds

  • 40 second rest between rounds

  • 12 point spread

POINT SYSTEM:

  • 1 point per standard kick or punch to chestguard

  • 2 points per standard kick to head (in headshot divisions only)

  • 3 points per spinning kick to head (in headshot divisions only)

GAMJEOMS (Penalty +1 point to opponent):

  • Falling (unless their fall is caused by an illegal technique from opponent or the faller scores a kick directly before hitting the ground)

  • Avoiding or delaying the match (turning the back, running away, etc.)

  • Pushing opponent out of the ring (with hands)

  • Pushing aggressively or longer than 3 seconds

    Hitting the opponent’s head with the hand

  •  

    Disobeying or disrespecting the referee

  • Attacking after kalyo (break) command
  • Stepping out/exiting the ring

  •  

    Attacking a fallen opponent

  • Headbutting or kneeing

  • Striking below the belt

  • Speaking

OTHER NOTES:

No significant gamjeom will be given for modern-style violations such as 

- Certain number of slides back in succession

- Kicking to the back of the head

- Lifting of the leg to cancel/block

- Duration of leg lift
